I strongly urge you to look at SpamSieve as a way to manage spam email on Mac. You can most likely just install and forget it but the training hot-keys are useful and it is VERY accurate. The only thing that will throw it is if you also have server-side spam filtering which is giving false positives (e.g. marking all my email from my client as spam!!) and then it can't move it to the source mailbox because the mail arrives in the junk folder. I was getting over 200 spam emails per day at one point and Spamsieve saved my mind from meltdown.

Note - it is NOT an anti-virus solution (I use Sophos and find it excellent apart from finding it works best if it is uninstalled and then reinstalled every 6 months or so, no idea why but it seems to cure the occasional slowness the product can cause). But most viruses arrive on spam mail anyway unless all your friends are really careless so it has a similar effect.

Linc you seem to be an expert on my problem. I understand that you hate sophos software. I will remove based on your recommendation. However, I have this annoying malware Mal/DrodZp-A. I found the harmful email but the "trashcan" (delete button) is not lit and I am unable to delete the email manually. I also understand that this is a windows problem. It still annoys me big time. Can you help me rid myself of this annoyance?

You should have no problem deleting the e-mail. If you downloaded the attached zip file, you'll need to find and delete that as well. The most recent version of Sophos handles it without difficulty.

Sophos does detect Windows malware, which can be a nice feature if you're receiving and sending files from Windows users. I've plugged in several USB thumb drives from Windows users that were infested, and the people who handed me the things had no clue there was a problem.

As far as I know, a Mac can't be infected without social engineering - i.e, you have to be tricked into installing the malware - but it's good to have a program that warns you. Not sure why Linc is a hater; I've been using Sophos for years, and have had no complaints and no problems.

Linc,

I have followed your advice before so I will take your advice to delete Sophos. But I would also like to delete and stop forever these contaminating emails. I used to be able to use Sophos to delete them but now Sophos just tells me to delete them manually. More annoying is that they have occasionally messed up my carbon copy cloner backups. How do I figure out the source of the suspect emails? I can drill down and delete them manually but that doesn't help me figure out the source.

This is just one of 13 that is now on the Sophos list:

/Users/cindyonmbpr/Library/Mail/V4/8B977EF9-9A58-48A6-B61A-5FBC7CD61E46/INBOX.mb ox/241AD41A-58EF-4830-823E-27C01C9D6593/Data/8/0/3/5/Attachments/5308063/2/Deliv ery_Notification_0000688081.zip

I don't understand how emails are grouped so I don't know where to begin to delete. I get too many emails which I use rules to delete since I can't seem to stop them by unsubscribing.

thanks for your help.
